What is Chiller?

The chiller produces chilled water for comfort and process cooling. Its efficiency (EER) is not a constant: it depends on the chilled water temperature, the condensing temperature and the condition of the heat exchangers.

Important in practice: the EER is rarely measured. It comes from cooling output divided by electrical input — which requires both figures, not just the chiller’s own display.

What is measured here

  • Chilled water flow and return plus flow rate → cooling output
  • Electrical power at the chiller feeder
  • Condensing temperature and outdoor temperature
  • EER as a computed figure from both

How we connect it — read-only

  • Cooling meter in the chilled water circuit over M-Bus.
  • Modbus meter at the chiller — the real electrical input.
  • Chiller controller over Modbus or BACnet for status and setpoints (read only).

What the AI does

  • Computes the EER continuously and detects a gradual decline.
  • Raises the chilled water temperature as far as demand allows.
  • Separates fouling from utilisation: if the EER falls at unchanged load, demand is not the cause.
  • Aligns chiller run time with PV hours where thermal mass allows.

What the rules require — Chiller

Why is the EER not simply shown in the controller?

Because cooling output there is usually estimated from characteristic curves rather than measured. The EER only becomes reliable with a cooling meter and an electricity meter — then it is a computed but measured figure.

Every degree of increase noticeably unloads the compressor. Exactly how much depends on the plant and the operating point — it becomes measurable immediately, because both electrical input and cooling output are captured.
