What is Charge point load management?

Load management is the layer between the service connection and the charge points. It is given an upper limit and allocates it across the active vehicles in real time. Without that layer the rule is simply: whoever plugs in gets full power — until the connection is maxed out.

Two levels: static means the charging infrastructure gets a fixed budget. Dynamic means the budget is whatever the building currently leaves over — which requires the building load to be measured, not estimated.

What is measured here

  • Total load at the service connection — the reference for the dynamic budget
  • Allocated versus requested power per charge point
  • Frequency of throttling and how long it lasts
  • Headroom to the connection limit in the most expensive quarter-hour

How we connect it — read-only

  • Modbus meter at the service connection — without it only a static budget is possible.
  • Load management controller through its interface (Modbus/REST), read only.
  • OCPP backend for status and allocation per charge point.

What the AI does

  • Checks whether the dynamic budget actually follows the building load — or whether a fixed value is quietly in force.
  • Shows how often throttling occurred and whether anyone finished late because of it.
  • Shifts other controllable loads so more budget stays free for charging.
  • Documents the headroom to the connection limit — the basis for asking whether a grid upgrade is really needed.

What the rules require — Charge point load management

Grounded in DIN 19643, VDI 2089, DGfdB and the German Buildings Energy Act. Same knowledge base as the European reference site; presented anonymously.

What is the difference between static and dynamic load management?

Static gives the charging infrastructure a fixed power budget regardless of what the building draws. Dynamic computes the budget continuously from the free connection capacity — which requires the building load to be measured.

Does load management avoid a grid upgrade?

It can defer or remove the need, because existing connection capacity is used better. Whether it suffices in a given case is shown by the measured headroom to the connection limit — not by a rule of thumb.

Do guests notice the throttling?

Only if dwell time is tight. That is why allocation is prioritised by departure time and it is logged whether anyone actually finished late — otherwise you are optimising blind.
