What is Charge point & OCPP?

From the building’s point of view a charge point is a very large but very flexible load. Large because it draws double-digit kilowatts; flexible because the vehicle usually stands there far longer than the charging itself takes.

OCPP is the open protocol between charge point and backend. It exposes status, power and energy per point — across vendors and without interfering with the charging control.

What is measured here

  • Status per charge point (free, occupied, charging)
  • Instantaneous power and energy per charging session
  • Dwell time versus charging time — the usable shifting window
  • Simultaneity across several points

How we connect it — read-only

  • OCPP (1.6J or 2.0.1) against the existing backend — read only.
  • Modbus meter on the charging feeder for the actual aggregate load.
  • Vehicle departure time where it is held in the booking or charging system.

What is OCPP and why does it matter?

OCPP is the open protocol between charge points and their backend. It makes charging infrastructure readable across vendors — the precondition for including charging in a load picture at all.

Does the guest have to wait for their vehicle?

No, as long as the departure time is known or can be estimated. Shifting happens only within the window between arrival and departure — the charge is ready in time.
