What is the mash tank?

The mash tank homogenises substrate and liquid before the digester. It buffers quality differences between deliveries so that the biology sees a steady input.

The scenario: Sediment settles in the bottom of the tank. The level still reads correctly, but the usable volume is smaller than assumed, so each batch is mixed shorter than planned — the recipe on paper and the mixture in the tank drift apart.

Why it matters

A homogeneous mixture protects the biology from shocks. Most process upsets downstream begin as a quality difference that was never evened out here.
