"Entkupplungsschutz" is the German term for interface (grid-decoupling) protection: the device that disconnects a PV system from the grid when the grid fails or drifts out of limits. In Canada the same function is called anti-islanding or utility-interactive protection, and for almost every residential and small commercial rooftop system it is built into the certified inverter — not a separate relay panel.

Direct answer: no separate relay for a standard Canadian rooftop PV system

If your inverter carries a Canadian certification mark for grid-connected inverters (CSA C22.2 No. 107.1 / UL 1741, tested to the IEEE 1547.1 anti-islanding procedure), the decoupling function is already inside the box. It continuously monitors grid voltage and frequency and stops energizing the line when an unintentional island forms — the design target under IEEE 1547 is to cease to energize within about 2 seconds. You do not add a German-style external NA-Schutz relay to satisfy this. What Canadian utilities do require on top of it is a manual AC disconnect switch: visible-break, lockable in the open position, labelled, and mounted where utility crews can reach it (usually beside the meter). That switch is for worker safety during line work; it is not the automatic protection.

When Canada does ask for dedicated interface protection

A separate protection relay enters the picture as system size and utility risk grow — typically for larger commercial and utility-scale connections, for rotating (synchronous or induction) generators rather than inverters, and where the feeder configuration makes islanding plausible. The trigger is set by the utility's own interconnection requirements, not by a single national number, so it varies: Hydro-Québec, Hydro One, Toronto Hydro, Alectra, BC Hydro, SaskPower, ENMAX, EPCOR, Manitoba Hydro and Nova Scotia Power each publish their own DER interconnection standard and technical requirements. Ask the utility one question early: "Does this project need a dedicated interface protection relay and a witness test, or is inverter-integrated anti-islanding accepted?" The answer decides your protection budget and your schedule.

The Canadian rulebook, in four documents

CSA C22.3 No. 9 covers interconnection of distributed energy resources with electricity supply systems — the umbrella document utilities reference. CSA C22.2 No. 257 covers interconnecting inverter-based micro-distributed resources to distribution systems. CSA C22.2 No. 107.1 (aligned with UL 1741) is the product standard your inverter must be certified to. And the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I, Section 64, governs the installation side — renewable energy systems, conductor sizing, disconnects, labelling. Provincial amendments to the CE Code apply, so the version enforced in Ontario, Alberta, BC and Québec can differ in detail. Your electrical inspection authority (ESA in Ontario, Technical Safety BC, RBQ in Québec, etc.) enforces the installation; the utility enforces the interconnection.

What actually gets checked at connection

For a small system the utility usually accepts the certification: you submit the inverter model, its certification listing, a single-line diagram and the site plan with the disconnect location. No relay test report is needed because the anti-islanding was type-tested at the factory. For a project that does need dedicated protection, expect the full package — protection settings for over/undervoltage and over/underfrequency to the utility's schedule, CT and VT arrangements, a relay settings sheet, and a commissioning or witness test where the protection is tripped in front of a utility representative before permission to operate is granted. Build that witness test into the timeline; it is a common cause of delayed energization.

Where a Canadian owner runs into trouble

Three recurring problems. First, an inverter bought abroad — a European unit configured for a 50 Hz grid and VDE-AR-N 4105 settings is not usable here; Canada runs 60 Hz and the unit needs a Canadian certification mark to pass inspection at all. Second, nuisance tripping: on a weak rural feeder, or at the end of a long single-phase line, voltage rise from your own export can push the inverter past its trip threshold and shut the array down repeatedly on sunny afternoons. That is a symptom of grid impedance and conductor sizing, not a broken decoupling function — the fix is on the AC side or in a utility-approved settings adjustment, never in disabling the protection. Third, battery and backup systems: the moment you add islanding capability for backup power, you need a transfer arrangement that physically separates the backup subpanel from the grid, and the utility will look at it closely.

Costs and funding in Canada

For a residential system the decoupling protection adds essentially nothing to your bill — it is a firmware function of an inverter you were buying regardless. The visible cost is the utility disconnect switch and its enclosure, plus the interconnection application fee your utility charges. Dedicated relay protection on a commercial project is a different order of magnitude: relay hardware, instrument transformers, engineering settings and the witness test together become a real line item, and it is worth pricing before the design is fixed. On the funding side, the federal Canada Greener Homes Grant closed to new applicants in 2024; as of writing the interest-free Canada Greener Homes Loan remains the main federal instrument, and provincial or utility programs (for example net metering in Ontario, BC and Québec, and provincial solar rebates that come and go) sit on top. Verify the current status of every program directly with the administrator before you count on it — these change frequently.
